Is your company's data secure across all platforms?

Do you have control over your company’s sensitive data?

Businesses are becoming less about hardware and more about virtual machines and the cloud. Many employees want access to their company e-mail on their smart phones. The question is: do you understand your company’s cloud?

There are a lot of free or cheap cloud services out their with DropBox, Box, as well as Google, Apple and Microsoft’s offerings for this. These are great options for personal use storing and sharing family photos etc, with access from your smart phone as well. The caveat with these offerings geared towards personal use is that you don’t have complete control over your data.

In the business setting, data security comes at a much higher price in keeping clients information secure, business operations, as well as “trade secrets.” What is the value of your data when you have to tell your clients your data was hacked and their information is now leaked to hackers? This could come at the price of lawsuits, lost clients, lost trust, and more.

What if an employee leaves their company laptop in a taxi cab on a business trip or their car is broken into and your company laptop is stolen? What is your plan to protect your data?

Most employees want access to their work email from their phone, because it allows them to be more mobile and not tied to a desktop. This is great for the employer because they have better access to work. There are two big security issues to think about with having a “bring your own device” policy. One is that your employees also have their personal email on the phone and this increases your risk for opening up malware attachments, which in turn can gain access to your data and infrastructure. The second problem to think about is a lost device. People misplace cell phones all the time or have them stolen. Do you have control to wipe the phone if this happens?
